It's a free software update just like it always is and roughly coincides with the recent releases of iOS 13 and the new iPadOS. Arguably the biggest addition is Apple Arcade for macOS. The subscription-based gaming service got pretty rave reviews when it launched on iOS last month, and the release of Catalina gives you another place to play those same games. If you would rather play What The Golfon something bigger than an iPhone screen, this is for you.
Beyond that, iTunes is finally dead. Music, Podcasts, and TV have been split into three desktop apps because the old iTunes app was overburdened and terrible to use. Trust us, this is a good thing.
