Come join us as we open the summer festival season with the Southeast Japanese School and Community Center’s 61stannual Cultural Festival and Ondo.
The festivities begin on Saturday, June 8, 3 to 9 p.m., and Sunday, June 9, 2 to 8 p.m. There will be fun activities, entertainment and great food for everyone.
On both days there will be games for children, an ikebana exhibit, bingo, open mic karaoke (bring your CDs), a rummage sale, a silent auction, taiko, and ondo dancing.
Saturday’s entertainment will include: Kamaki Keawe’s Ukulele Jammers, Japanese classical dance featuring renowned artist Shiho Tendou, a judo demonstration, Hawaiian Delites’ island-style music, and Kozue Matsumoto’s Koto Ensemble.
Sunday’s lineup will begin with a kendo demonstration, Kekaimoku’s Hawaiian Dancers, J-pop dances with the Gakuen students, and conclude with our Good Luck Raffle.
Come for our delicious food featuring: chicken teriyaki, yakisoba, sushi, udon, orange chicken, pork chops, fried wonton, Okinawan dango, shave ice, and more. There are ample indoor and outdoor sitting areas where you can enjoy your meal while relaxing with family and friends.
Be sure to join the traditional evening ondo dances. They are fun and simple for everyone, even for children and first-timers. Just come into the dance circle and follow the other dancers. The important thing is to participate, and share the joy of community dancing.
